EMA’s Green Streaming Guide for February 2023

Valentine's Day typically dominates people's thoughts when they think of February. Environmental Media Association wants to share a new framework of what your brain should think about: a must-see list of movies or television shows that were sustainably produced!

Below is a list of six shows or films with an environmental focus that received our EMA Green Seal or features environmental messaging.

Nope

Nope was produced by the brilliant Jordan Peel and was released to the public in July 2022. I was left with a multitude of interesting theories and themes after watching this horror thriller. It will no doubt leave you speculating about what you just watched, and that is just what Peel does best.

I want to highlight this film because of their productive awareness of their carbon footprint while producing. Their fuel vendor worked closely with them to secure renewable diesel fuel emitting approximately 80% less carbon dioxide over its lifetime than standard diesel. Additionally, reducing waste on set was a priority for the crew; reusable water bottles were implemented, preventing the waste of hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

(Feb 1, 2023 on Disney+)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came out in November 2022 in theaters and just became available to stream on Disney+. As Wakanda mourns King T'Challa's death, its citizens fight to defend their homeland from international intervention.

This film received our Green Seal award. Black Panther shows us ways to rebuild our urban areas sustainably. In addition, the movie explains how the people of Wakanda rely on natural resources to sustain a self-sufficient economic system due to living in a capitalist world.

True Spirit

(February 3, 2023 on Netflix)

True Spirit is an Australian heartfelt and inspiring film. As the 16-year-old who set out to become the youngest person to sail around the world entirely by herself, Jessica Watson is the film's subject. Based on her true story, True Spirit depicts her incredible journey.

Abbott Elementary: “Art Teacher”

The new series Abbott Elementary is a comedy streaming on HBO Max, Hulu, and Prime Video. It's about a group of teachers dedicated to creating a positive learning environment for their students attending an underfunded Philadelphia public school.

Abbott Elementary received our EMA Green Seal for sustainable production, and the episode "Art Teacher" won the 2022 EMA award for best comedy. In this episode, two main characters work to develop a school garden to provide fresh food for meals at school.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania Movie

(Feb 17, 2023 in theaters)

Marvel Studios is releasing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania on February 17th. In this movie, the characters go on an adventure that pushes them beyond their boundaries and puts them into contact with strange new creatures in the Quantum Realm. Although I don't call myself the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe fanatic, this specific film has caught my eye with its incorporation of sustainable production.
