We’re well into spring here in the Northern Hemisphere, however, with everything that’s been going on this year, we hope you haven’t forgotten about the best part of spring: spring cleaning! 2020 has been quite messy, but that doesn’t mean your home has to be! In fact, it’s important that we keep our homes sanitized and tidy in order to stay healthy and productive. We’ve partnered with ECOS in our latest EMA Cleans challenge! Use these tips and show us your spotless spaces by tagging @Green4EMA and @ECOSCleans!

Reduce Your Waste

Two words: source reduction. The easiest way to keep waste from accumulating is by preventing it from the start. If you don’t make a lot of mess, you won’t have a lot to clean! Working toward zero-waste goals will reduce how much trash you throw away, and will certainly reduce your environmental impact as well. After all, trash breaks down into methane, which according to the Environmental Protection Agency is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps 25 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Use Natural Cleaners

Right now, many grocery stores are out of or running low on cleaning supplies as a result of COVID-19. Thankfully, you can easily search for some fantastic natural cleaners on the ECOS product locator, where you can find all of their cleaning products online or in stores so you can limit your excursions while stay-at-home orders remain in place. ECOS has a range of cleaning supplies fit for every part of the home, from the kitchen, to the bathroom, and anywhere in between. Take it from EMA Executive Board Officer Frances Fisher on our Instagram (which is @green4ema, by the way), ECOS plant-based soaps are the best for cleaning your reusable gloves after tending to your victory garden!

Make Smart Replacements

You might be used to the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, but did you know that there are actually 6 R’s that people reducing their waste follow? Those R’s are: rethink, refuse, reuse, reduce, recycle, and repair!  Instead of constantly buying paper towels, rethink about materials you can reuse to clean, such as kitchen towels. If you have a broken vacuum cleaner, see if you can get it repaired or find a replacement part, rather than throwing it away and buying a new one. These cleaning swaps will save you money and will help keep our environment clean, too.
