EMA Joins Biossance and Jonathan Van Ness for Launch of The Clean Academy
There's a lot of talk these days about products being clean and natural, but what does that actually mean? Here at EMA, we've always stressed transparency when it comes to the items that families purchase. From our GMO labeling campaign to calling for glyphosate to be banned, we want to make sure the products our families purchase are safe for our health and the health of our planet. That being said, we are thrilled to partner with our friends at Biossance on the launch of The Clean Academy. It was an easy yes for us since the focus of the project is to empower consumers to make the right choices regarding beauty products.
To launch The Academy, EMA CEO, Debbie Levin, along with EMA Board Members Lance Bass, Wendie Malick, Amy Smart, and Michael Turchin, attended the launch party in Beverly Hills. EMA CEO, Debbie Levin was thrilled to reunite with The Clean Academy's Brand Ambassador Jonathan Van Ness. This summer, Debbie joined Jonathan for a discussion on Sustainability 101 for an episode of The Clean Academy. Watch below!
About The Clean Academy
In response to consumer demand for clarity and transparency around clean beauty, Biossance launched The Clean Academy in October 2019 – a comprehensive educational platform serving as a complete clean beauty resource for consumers and industry alike.
Leveraging Biossance’s expertise in highly effective, sustainable beauty through biotechnology, the Clean Academy launched eight videos in partnership with Brand Ambassador Jonathan Van Ness, the Environmental Media Association, the Environmental Working Group, scientists and more. Spanning topics from ingredients to sustainability, the videos simplify complex concepts to address the biggest questions voiced by consumers in a rapidly growing – and increasingly complex - segment of the beauty industry.
The Clean Academy will continue partnerships with scientists as well as other clean beauty industry experts to continuously release content that addresses new developments in ingredients, clarify terminology and provide actionable advice, so consumers are empowered to make better choices for themselves and the planet.
In 2020, The Clean Academy will evolve to include community-driven events, supporting Biossance’s mission to make clean beauty the new standard. In addition, a celebratory gala and an endowment fund initiative will highlight those in and out of the industry who are taking actionable steps to sustain our planet.
The event was featured in many news outlets including Extra TV, US Weekly, and Wonderwall.
We are thrilled to announce our new EMA Sustainability Standards. Our goal is to distinguish businesses that hold environmental stewardship as a value that cannot be compromised. While numerous certifications and seals allow consumers to be more informed, it's still ambiguous as to which businesses actually care. In other words, companies may attain an environmental seal to stay competitive, not because stewardship is a company value. For this reason, EMA showcases organizations that have sustainability as part of their culture, to further inform consumers to make the best choice for our planet and their health. The Standards are split into two categories: Businesses/Corporations and Hotels/Resorts.
EMA Plant-Based Recipes for the Holidays
Plant-based diets are beneficial for both the environment and your health. Working with We Are the Weather inspires us to share the benefits of a plant-based diet and recommendations from our Board Members of substitutions people can make in their everyday routines. This month we are sharing EMA Board Member Ed Begley Jr.’s Olivada recipe, a delicious plant-based appetizer.
Ed's Olivada
1 6 oz. can of black olives
1 pint of pitted kalamata or green olives
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons pine nuts
2 tablespoons virgin olive oil
Coarsely chop half of the olives and set aside. In a food processor or blender, whirl the remaining olives, garlic, pine nuts and olive oil until the mixture is somewhat smooth. (It's okay if some of the pine nuts remain whole). Stir in the remaining olives and serve.
Enjoy!
